When you receive the camera, the default setting for the AF activation is the shutter button. To reassign this to the <strong>AF-ON<\/strong> button, go to the <strong>Custom Setting Menu<\/strong> and scroll down to <strong>a7 AF Activation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iangrandjean.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Nikon-Z6-back-button-focus-settings-2-1024x699-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.iangrandjean.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Nikon-Z6-back-button-focus-settings-2-1024x699-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2382\" width=\"359\" height=\"245\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.iangrandjean.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Nikon-Z6-back-button-focus-settings-2-1024x699-1.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.iangrandjean.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Nikon-Z6-back-button-focus-settings-2-1024x699-1-300x205.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.iangrandjean.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Nikon-Z6-back-button-focus-settings-2-1024x699-1-768x524.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 359px) 100vw, 359px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">a7 <em>AF Activation Menu<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now you can select <strong>AF-ON<\/strong> <strong>only<\/strong> which will decouple the AF activation from the shutter button and assign it to the <strong>AF-ON<\/strong> button instead. Once you have scrolled to <strong>AF-ON only<\/strong>, click on the right arrow button which will display the <strong>Out-of-focus<\/strong> release menu. Select <strong>Enable<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iangrandjean.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/nikon-back-button-focus-4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.iangrandjean.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/nikon-back-button-focus-4-1024x665.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2385\" width=\"363\" height=\"235\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.iangrandjean.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/nikon-back-button-focus-4-1024x665.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.iangrandjean.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/nikon-back-button-focus-4-300x195.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.iangrandjean.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/nikon-back-button-focus-4-768x498.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.iangrandjean.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/nikon-back-button-focus-4.jpg 1074w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 363px) 100vw, 363px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>This allows the camera to make a picture even if the subject isn&rsquo;t perfectly sharp.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now all this actually gives you a lot more than just moving buttons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1 : A first pressure on the shutter button will now lock the exposure setting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2 : If the camera is setup correctly, with the <strong>Focus Mode <\/strong>(Photo Shooting Menu) set to <strong>AF-C<\/strong> Continuous AF, you will be able to control <strong>BOTH<\/strong> the exposure <strong>AND<\/strong> the autofocus at the same time, but independently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Think of the flexibility &#8211; you can lock (or not) the exposure while independently controlling what the AF is doing &#8211; this is even more important when using the 3D AF tracking functions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This takes a bit of getting used to, but everyone I&rsquo;ve spoken to that has adopted this system  are firmly convinced it&rsquo;s the only way to go!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Just a couple of personal thoughts on Back Button Focus.
