{"id":2357,"date":"2021-04-26T10:47:27","date_gmt":"2021-04-26T09:47:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.iangrandjean.com\/blog\/?p=2357"},"modified":"2021-04-27T14:35:51","modified_gmt":"2021-04-27T13:35:51","slug":"nikon-z-series-firmware-updates","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.iangrandjean.com\/blog\/2021\/04\/26\/nikon-z-series-firmware-updates\/","title":{"rendered":"NIKON Z Series Firmware Updates"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The latest series of <strong>NIKON<\/strong> <strong>Z series<\/strong> firmware updates (<em>Z6\/7 3.3, Z6ll 1.2<\/em>) have finally convinced me to try <strong>3D Tracking autofocus<\/strong>. The new firmware has made this much more precise and therefore more interesting to me, particularly with circus performers hurling themselves all over the place in front of my lens&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>These settings were available from the previous firmware update &#8211; this update has just made them more accurate.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>3D Tracking<\/strong> works very differently depending on which <strong>Focus Mode<\/strong> has been selected, and this can make a <strong>huge<\/strong> difference to the way you capture your images.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>AF-S Single AF<\/strong> &#8211; once you have identified\/selected the area\/object to track, the camera will automatically follow the selection until you press the button to which you have assigned the <strong>3D Tracking<\/strong>, turning it off &#8211; turning it again on allows you to change your selection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>AF-C Continuous AF<\/strong> &#8211; you must keep your finger on the <strong>AF-ON<\/strong> button to &lsquo;force&rsquo; the <strong>3D Tracking<\/strong> to follow the subject. Releasing the <strong>AF-ON<\/strong> button effectively resets the selection and you can select another area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are just three steps to setting up <strong>3D Tracking autofocus<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 1<\/strong> &#8211; In the <strong>Custom Setting Menu<\/strong>, select A7 &#8211; <strong>AF Activation<\/strong> and select <strong>AF-ON only<\/strong>. This will turn on the AF-ON button for focusing.(<em>This should ALWAYS be activated<\/em>, <em>IMHO<\/em>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 2<\/strong> &#8211; Still in the <strong>Custom Setting Menu<\/strong>, select F2 &#8211; <strong>Custom control assignment<\/strong> and set one of the buttons to <strong>Subject Tracking<\/strong> &#8211; I&rsquo;ve chosen the <strong>Fn2<\/strong> button by the lens<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iangrandjean.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/cca.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"320\" height=\"214\" src=\"https:\/\/www.iangrandjean.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/cca.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2359\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.iangrandjean.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/cca.png 320w, http:\/\/www.iangrandjean.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/cca-300x201.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 320px) 100vw, 320px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 3<\/strong> &#8211; change the <strong>Focus mode<\/strong> to <strong>Auto-area AF<\/strong> &#8211; this is done by clicking the &lsquo;I&rsquo; (info) button and using the joystick to navigate to the <strong>Focus mode<\/strong> logo &#8211; click on that and the choice of focus modes is displayed &#8211; select <strong>Auto-Area AF<\/strong> (at the right)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iangrandjean.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/af-mode.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"320\" height=\"214\" src=\"https:\/\/www.iangrandjean.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/af-mode.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2360\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.iangrandjean.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/af-mode.png 320w, http:\/\/www.iangrandjean.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/af-mode-300x201.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 320px) 100vw, 320px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Using <strong>3D tracking<\/strong> is relatively simple, but takes a bit of getting used to. When  the <strong>Fn2<\/strong> (in my example) button is pressed a large white square outline lights up in the middle of the viewfinder &#8211; point the camera to the area\/object you wish to track and press the <strong>AF-ON<\/strong> button. Depending on the <strong>Focus Mode<\/strong> selected (AF-S Single point or AF-C Continuous) the camera will react differently. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As previously stated, in <strong>AF-S<\/strong> mode, once you have identified\/selected the area\/object to track, the camera will automatically follow the selection until you press the button to which you have assigned the <strong>3D Tracking<\/strong>, turning it off &#8211; turning it again on allows you to change your selection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In <strong>AF-C<\/strong> mode, you must keep your finger on the <strong>AF-ON<\/strong> button to &lsquo;force&rsquo; the <strong>3D Tracking<\/strong> to follow the subject. Releasing the <strong>AF-ON<\/strong> button effectively resets the selection and you can select another area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The nice thing is that all of this can be saved to one of the &lsquo;U&rsquo; settings &#8211; you could, for example, set U2 to Auto ISO, normal (spot) AF and U3 to the same Auto ISO but with 3D tracking &#8211; that way if the movement was too rapid for the camera using 3D tracking, you can quickly change back to &lsquo;regular&rsquo; continuous AF with the U2 setting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At my next circus residence I&rsquo;ll be able to do some real-world testing of these two options &#8211; I&rsquo;ll let you know how I get on.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The latest series of NIKON Z series firmware updates (Z6\/7 3.3, Z6ll 1.2) have finally convinced me to try 3D Tracking autofocus.
