{"id":2129,"date":"2020-03-06T11:08:06","date_gmt":"2020-03-06T10:08:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.iangrandjean.com\/blog\/?p=2129"},"modified":"2020-04-02T16:27:48","modified_gmt":"2020-04-02T15:27:48","slug":"finaly-something-useful-from-canon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.iangrandjean.com\/blog\/2020\/03\/06\/finaly-something-useful-from-canon\/","title":{"rendered":"Finally &#8211; Something useful from Canon"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>UK based photo site \u00ab\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.northlight-images.co.uk\/\">NorthLight Images<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0\u00bb has recently discovered a patent application from <strong>Canon<\/strong> (<em>popular photocopier manufacturer<\/em>) that will make many people, like me, who use battery grips on their cameras, very interested\/jealous&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"504\" src=\"http:\/\/www.iangrandjean.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/canon.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2130\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.iangrandjean.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/canon.jpg 650w, http:\/\/www.iangrandjean.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/canon-300x233.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This shows a \u00ab\u00a0Universal\u00a0\u00bb battery grip that attaches to different camera bodies with a changeable adapter. Makes you wonder why no-one has ever come up with something like this before &#8211; although,<strong> Nikon<\/strong> tend to treat there battery grips as a cash cow and price them far too high. It is, after all, only a box with minimal electronics Inside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anyway, if this ever sees the light of day, <strong>Canon<\/strong> users will really be a step, a leap ahead of other camera users.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Battery grips are not only for holding batteries (with the exception of the <strong>MB-N10<\/strong> for the <strong>Z 6<\/strong> &amp; <strong>7<\/strong>) they also allow you to have extra controls, or rather, duplicate controls to allow a more comfortable grip on the camera when you use it in a vertical position, for example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To enable the correct connection between these controls and the camera electronics, a series of contacts are available on the camera baseplate, which marry up to similar contacts on the battery grip. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Up until now, each camera series has had these contacts in different positions on the baseplate, allowing <strong>Nikon<\/strong> (and <strong>Canon<\/strong>) to sell expensive battery grips for each new model.
